Competition in the foldable phone market has become increasingly fierce. However, Samsung, the pioneer in the segment, was lagging behind. Its rivals—mainly Chinese—were offering more innovative devices, and above all, much thinner than the Z Fold. With the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, the company finally caught up, and a new test shows whether the device’s slimming down had an impact on battery life.
One of the main selling points of the Z Fold 7 is undoubtedly its thinness. For reference, when folded, last year’s Z Fold 6 was 12.1 mm thick, while the new model reduces this figure significantly to 8.9 mm. Yes, Samsung did some witchcraft here, but technology has its limits. Since the company isn’t yet working with high-density silicon-carbon batteries, it couldn’t integrate a cell with more mAh. Fortunately, there’s no reduction in battery capacity either—you’ll find the same 4,400mAh.
How does the Galaxy Z Fold 7 perform in battery tests?
The device’s thinness may worry you not only about real-world stamina but also about performance. After all, there’s less internal space available to dissipate heat. Fortunately, Samsung has optimized the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to the max, and the battery test from YouTube channel Lover of Tech makes this clear.
The battery test involved a mix of demanding tasks. The list includes 4K video recording, Instagram Live, TikTok Browse, YouTube playback, and music streaming. In this rigorous evaluation, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 achieved a total screen time of 5 hours, 36 minutes, and 31 seconds. This performance puts it ahead of previous models, although it is quite close to the Galaxy Fold 6. This speaks well of Samsung since the new model is much thinner.
For context, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 managed 5 hours, 15 minutes, and 15 seconds of screen time in the same test. The Galaxy Z Fold 5, on the other hand, lagged by over an hour, showing a more significant gap.

What does this mean? Galaxy Z Fold 6 owners won’t find any noticeable battery life improvements in the Galaxy Z Fold 7. However, users of previous generations will feel a big difference. So, if you have a Galaxy Z Fold 5 or 4 (or even older) and need more stamina for your daily use, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is ideal for you.
Z Fold 7 also excels in thermal management
Beyond just endurance, the Z Fold 7 also demonstrated efficient heat management. The device maintained the coolest temperature under heavy load. Again, kudos to Samsung for the hardware and software optimization of the handset.
Some prospective buyers might have hoped for a larger battery capacity in the Z Fold 7. However, these early results highlight Samsung’s ability to extract maximum efficiency from its products. It appears that even with consistent battery size, continuous advancements in display technology and internal optimizations contribute to improving the user experience. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 might not be a battery behemoth, but its performance seems designed to meet the demands of most users.
