Galaxy Z TriFold Readies for US Debut: Firmware Testing Starts

Samsung is leaving everything ready for the release of its first tri-folding phone, the Galaxy Z TriFold. Despite years of patents and speculation surrounding the complex design, a market debut appears imminent. Recent rumors point to December 5 as a possible official launch date. Now, recent developments confirm that the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is on track for release, particularly in the United States market.

Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold: Unlocked US firmware testing begins

The initial release for the Z TriFold is expected to be limited to a few global regions. In fact, the US could be the only Western market in the first wave. The device will be available in both carrier-locked and unlocked versions in the country. This week, a critical milestone was reached: firmware testing for the unlocked US variant (model number SM-F968U1) has begun.

For a high-profile device reportedly launching in just a few weeks, the timing of this final firmware testing is notably late. This suggests a rushed development schedule. It could also be about a highly secretive process where the final software elements for the unlocked US model are just now becoming visible outside of the company’s direct control. The start of this testing confirms that the necessary logistical steps for a US market release are now in motion.

The cost and complexity of folding thrice

The TriFold introduces a challenging new hardware format, folding twice to achieve a highly portable profile. When fully opened, the device will offer a large 10-inch main display. When closed, it shrinks to a 6.5-inch cover screen. This dual-folding design requires a powerful processor, likely a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, to manage the software complexities of the two hinges. Previous reports suggested that Samsung aims to offer a “portable PC” experience with this handset.

Consumers should note the expected pricing reflects this complexity. Current estimates place the device around $3,000 USD (approximately 4.4 million Korean won). This price positions the TriFold at a significant premium over existing folding smartphones, which already carry high costs.

The US firmware testing marks the final, necessary step for retail readiness. The Galaxy Z TriFold is scheduled to launch soon, introducing a new, complex, and highly expensive device format to the competitive mobile market.
