Dashlane Becomes First Password Manager to Implement FIDO Credential Exchange on Android

For most smartphone users, moving digital credentials between different management apps has long been a cumbersome and insecure process. The standard method usually involves exporting a vault into a plaintext CSV file. However, a new technical standard is beginning to change how this data travels between platforms. Dashlane recently announced the implementation of the FIDO Alliance’s Credential Exchange (CX) specifications for Android.

This development aims to replace risky file exports with a direct, encrypted transfer protocol between applications. A plaintext CSV is essentially a digital spreadsheet that leaves every password, note, and credit card number exposed in a device’s storage. By moving away from the “vault.csv” model, the system reduces the window of opportunity for local data theft during a transition.

Dashlane adopts FIDO standard to replace unencrypted CSV exports on Android

The shift toward the new protocol is a response from the industry to current needs. Passkeys are cryptographic credentials that are significantly more secure than traditional passwords. Because they are bound to specific hardware or encrypted environments, they cannot be copied into a simple spreadsheet for manual transfer.

The Credential Exchange protocol creates a secure “handshake” between two apps, allowing these complex credentials to move without losing their cryptographic integrity. This ensures that users who have started adopting passwordless logins aren’t “locked in” to a single provider simply because they lack a way to export their keys.

    The adoption hurdle

This technology is now live on the Dashlane app for Android as of February 25. However, there’s a common industry hurdle to resolve: interoperability. For a direct transfer to work, both the app sending the data and the app receiving it must support the same FIDO standard.

Currently, several major players, including Google Password Manager and other popular third-party managers, are still in the process of implementing these specifications. They need to catch up so users can take advantage of this infrastructure for a safe move. In these cases, the traditional CSV method, which is less secure, is still the only option.
