When you build your own PC, you have to pick off-the-shelf parts. This means that you basically have to make do with whatever companies are offering. But when you’re a company as big as Apple, it’s a different story. This was revealed during an interview where Apple execs talked about the iPhone Duo display and Samsung’s role in it.
iPhone Duo display details revealed in interview
The interview was conducted by MrMobile, also known as Michael Fisher, where he spoke to three Apple executives. This includes Rich Dinh, the VP of iPhone Product Design; Piyush Pratik, the Senior Product Manager for iPhone; and JP Guillou, the Senior Director of Display Technology for iPhone.
The interview encompassed multiple topics, but there was a portion of the interview where the display of the iPhone Duo was brought up. Prior to the phone being officially announced, many had speculated that Samsung would be providing Apple with the panels. It turns out the rumors were true.
However, the interview revealed that it wasn’t as straightforward as Apple picking something Samsung had already made. According to Dinh, he said that Apple’s approach is about how it affects the user experience. It’s also about the design they’re trying to accomplish. And it’s only from there they work with manufacturers to develop those parts.
This means that this isn’t Apple picking a display that Samsung already made and might be using in some of its phones. It’s a custom display based around what Apple wants that is then made by Samsung for them. Guillou then followed up by saying, “The display doesn’t exist at the vendor until we start working on it.”
What else was revealed
The interview is actually rather interesting if you’re curious about how the iPhone Duo was developed. In addition to speaking about Samsung’s role in the iPhone Duo, the interview also covered Apple’s decision on going with a nanotexture display, as opposed to something glossy.
They also spoke on the durability of the iPhone Duo, like how it has an IP68 rating, something of a rarity among foldables. Towards the end, MrMobile also tried to get the Apple execs to talk about a possible iPhone Flip or iPhone Trifold. Unfortunately, all three execs maintained Apple’s trademark tight lips.
