Pointing out how India presents itself as a land of opportunities, Qualcomm India President Savi Soin, while visiting Gujarat on Saturday, said artificial intelligence (AI) could be a catalyst that helps the country “leapfrog” ahead of global competitors.

Speaking at the second convocation of Adani University in Ahmedabad, Soin told graduating students and their parents that India’s unique demographic scale and its growing appetite for technology place it at a decisive moment of economic transformation. “India is at the cusp of amazing opportunity not just for companies like Qualcomm which I represent, but also for everybody else. The demographics are unbelievable. There are 377 million people who are in the Gen-Z category and that is the entire population of the United States,” he said.

Soin emphasised that AI could be the accelerant that unlocks this demographic potential. “AI is a big equaliser. It is a big opportunity for India to leapfrog. There are a lot of opportunities here for us to work together and figure out how to leapfrog. AI could be that big difference for us and we need to grasp it in a much more responsible (manner),” the official added.

Reflecting on India’s shifting global position, he added, “India is the land of opportunity and now it is the Indian dream and no longer the American dream.” Soin, who left India as a 18-year old, also shared the moment that brought him back to India after decades abroad. “As I was boarding a flight from Beijing to Los Angeles three years ago, my CEO called me asking, India is rising and has big opportunities, why don’t you go there? For the next 12 hours I had an excel sheet in front of me and I had a question: will I be able to make a difference? To be honest I had never worked in India and so it was a big decision for me to figure out how I will make an impact and if I will fit in the culture. I landed in LA and decided this was the opportunity for me.” he added.
