The EV Tax Credits Now Expire 9/30/25. What you Need to Know.

The EV Tax Credits Now Expire 9/30/25. What you Need to Know.

The EV Tax Credits will Now Expire 9/30/25

A PSA to readers who have recently considered the purchase of an electric vehicle (EV): the EV tax credits now have an expiration date of September 30, 2025. Technically, any eligible EV purchase must be delivered by that deadline (not just purchased). This applies to both new and used eligible vehicles (full lists of every EV still eligible below) for qualified purchasers (details below).

The EV tax credits, which were modified in the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, previously had an expiration date of December 31, 2032. That has changed. They will prematurely end as a result of the Republican Congressional OBBBA reconciliation tax bill that was signed by the President on July 4, 2025.

I’m still digging through all of the implications of that new bill, but I wanted to share this specific update ASAP because:

    1. The vehicle purchase cycle from exploration to delivery can take a while, so I wanted to get the word out for anyone considering an EV.
    2. As we get closer to the 9/30/25 deadline, some models may run out of inventory.
    3. I don’t anticipate that EV tax credits will return again (at least not in the near future).

It is possible that you may be able to find a few good deals as we get closer to the new deadline as dealers don’t want to be stuck with old inventory once the credits expire – but you’d run the risk of that inventory selling out.

    EV Tax Credit Eligibility

Until the new September 30, 2025 EV tax credit deadline, the same eligibility rules still apply that I highlighted in detail in my EV tax credit overview article. Check out that article for full details, but I’ll summarize the main points here:

    • EVs eligible for the tax credit have certain U.S. material and manufacturing requirements. A full list of eligible vehicles in 2025 can be found below.
    • Ineligible vehicles may still come with a loophole EV lease tax credit. As always, do your homework here and get everything in writing from the dealer if you are interested in this option.
    • There are income eligibility caps based on modified adjusted gross income (MAGI). The caps are set at $150,000 (individual filer) and $300,000 (married filing jointly) for new eligible EVs and $75,000 (individual filer) and $150,000 (married filing jointly). Other qualified buyer limitations may apply, so dig in to the full details if you are interested.

Also, don’t forget that there may still be some state electric vehicle tax credits and rebates remaining as well.

Vehicles Still Eligible for a Tax Credit Until 9/30/2025

Below is an updated list of every new EV still eligible for a tax credit in 2025. None of the cheapest new cars make the list, but a few get close with the tax credit.

Currently, there is also 1 PHEV eligible for a tax credit:

Both of these lists were last updated 7/10/25 to reflect the IRS’s 5/19/25 revisions. It is possible that other vehicles may be added to this list throughout the rest of the year.

Also, here’s more info and a potential list of qualified used vehicles that could qualify for the used EV credit (if other criteria is met).
