Samsung’s One UI 9.5 May Finally Bring Dark Theme Icons

Samsung’s One UI 9.5 May Finally Bring Dark Theme Icons

Galaxy users who love dark mode have long dealt with a minor visual annoyance: glowing app icons with white backgrounds staring at them from an otherwise dark home screen. While iPhones have offered dark-style icons for a while, Samsung‘s native interface left app icons unchanged regardless of the theme settings. That design choice could finally change with the arrival of One UI 9.5, as a recent leak points to true dark theme icons.

Early code hints resurface in Samsung system apps

Recent discoveries point toward Samsung working on native, system-wide dark theme icons for its next software update. As first reported by SammyGuru, version 1.3.07.3791 of Samsung’s Nearby Device app includes hidden code references and preview assets for dark icon variants. The leak showcases darker designs for core stock applications, including Gallery, My Files, Messages, and the Phone dialer.

This isn’t the first time the feature has crossed Samsung’s development pipeline. Native dark icon toggles briefly appeared during early testing for One UI 8.5 before Samsung quietly pulled them from stable builds. Its sudden reappearance in production app code suggests that developers are laying the groundwork for a broader rollout in One UI 9.5 rather than abandoning the concept entirely.

Why built-in dark icons make a big difference

While Galaxy owners can currently customize their home screens using third-party launchers or Samsung’s Good Lock suite, system-level support makes a world of difference for everyday usability.

Native dark theme icons have several advantages. First, they bring real visual consistency to your phone. With Dark mode support, app icons automatically align with your Dark theme and custom wallpapers without needing external icon packs. Second, darkening the background tiles takes away the white spots that can be blinding when using the phone at night—significantly reducing eye strain.

Lastly, it makes the stock launcher experience a lot cleaner, giving users a unified aesthetic all the way through the default One UI interface.

Release timeline and what lies ahead

Samsung is expected to officially introduce One UI 9.5 early next year with its flagship Galaxy S27 series. Major releases like One UI 9.0 are generally all about Android core updates and improvements. In contrast, mid-cycle “.5” releases tend to be more about polished UI tweaks and customization features.

Samsung is now focusing on rolling out future One UI 9 beta builds to existing devices like the Galaxy S25 series and recent foldables. However, with One UI 9.5 test builds still appearing, more information on dark icons and potential interface tweaks should become more clear in the months ahead.
