Apple Reportedly Canceled Flip-Style Foldable iPhone During Early Development

It was earlier reported that the Cupertino tech giant is working on a new clamshell or flip-style foldable iPhone, alongside the regular book-style foldable. However, a new report now claims that Apple has reportedly canceled its plan to launch the new flip-foldable iPhone as the firm believes the product adds little innovation to its premium lineup.

Apple explored the new flip-foldable iPhone, but it has now been canceled

Reports from supply chain sources suggest Apple once explored a clamshell design similar to modern Flip phones. The concept foldable iPhone would have folded vertically to create a compact device for pockets and small bags. Internally, it was expected to compete with popular models such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series. Apple initially believed the product could attract buyers who wanted a stylish foldable device without the size of a book-style foldable phone. However, while examining the project, the firm ruled out possible compromises in battery life, camera hardware, and display durability that might weaken the experience.

The internal development team of Apple reportedly debated whether the Flip-style foldable iPhone truly added value to the lineup. The company has historically delayed new categories until it believes the technology meets its standards. In this case, leadership concluded that the smaller foldable format mainly duplicated what a regular iPhone already offers. Folding the phone in half reduced internal space. This limits battery capacity and camera systems while also increasing engineering complexity and manufacturing cost.

Executives ultimately decided the concept should be canceled for now.

The regular iPhone Fold is in the final stage of its development

Despite the canceled Flip concept, Apple is still moving ahead with a premium book-style foldable iPhone. The device will reportedly sit above the Pro Max model and may become part of a broader Ultra strategy. Further, Apple hopes this larger foldable design will deliver clearer advantages. It is expected to offer better multitasking features, improved productivity, and a bigger display experience for users.
