Google Goes All In on Vertical AI Videos With Veo 3.1's New Feature

The short-form video format, aka vertical videos, is the one trending these days. Be it TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram, every social media platform gets massive viewership from such content. Google is well aware of this, and with the latest update to its AI video generation tool, Veo 3.1, the company is rolling out a feature that can turn portrait images into vertical AI videos. The feature appears to help creators push more AI-generated videos, without having to crop them to fit for Reels, Shorts, and more.

Google’s updated Veo 3.1 can now generate vertical videos using portrait images by default

In its The Keyword blog post, Google today announced that Veo 3.1’s “Ingredients to Video” feature now supports native 9:16 aspect ratio. In simple words, all you have to do is input Veo a few images, and it generates lively, expressive vertical videos without compromising on composition or detail.

That’s not all; the Ingredients to Video feature can generate full-screen portrait videos by default, for the first time. This eliminates the hassle of cropping and resizing the AI videos to fit into the social media platform’s portrait canvas. Google also says the update ensures more natural movement, richer storytelling, and better scene flow, even when prompts are short.

Besides the aforementioned changes, identity consistency is at the core of this update. Google mentions that generated characters are recognizable across scenes, even when locations change. More importantly, the videos generated using Veo 3.1’s Ingredients to Video feature retain backgrounds, objects, and textures across the clips, without breaking the visual narrative.

Better video upscaling and AI content transparency

Apart from changes to video formats, Veo 3.1 also introduces upscaling at up to 1080p and 4K. That’s a big plus, considering the improved 1080p output is dedicated to editing workflows. While the 4K upscaling caters to the needs of professionals, to whom texture and clarity are the utmost priority.

Google is rolling these upgrades out across its ecosystem. Consumers can access Veo 3.1 in the Gemini app, YouTube Shorts, and YouTube Create. For professional and enterprise users, the support is dropping inside Flow, Google Vids, the Gemini API, and Vertex AI.

Besides Veo 3.1’s vertical video generation capability and improved upscaling, Google is also taking transparency a lot more seriously. Going forward, all AI-generated videos made using Veo will carry SynthID watermarks. Using Gemini, you can now verify whether the video used any of Google’s AI tools.
