PG Gas Shortage Live Updates: An LPG shortage is forcing around 40 per cent of restaurants in Kerala to shut down as many establishments are unable to switch to alternative cooking methods, industry representatives said.
Apart from restaurants, caterers, hostels, canteens and crematoriums have also been affected by the LPG shortage following the conflict in West Asia.
India is experiencing a severe LPG shortage after over half its imports, primarily routed through the Strait of Hormuz, were disrupted by the conflict in West Asia.
To address the shortage, the government has increased domestic production, redirected C3–C4 hydrocarbon streams to raise LPG output by over 25%, and diversified imports to include the US, Norway, Canada, Algeria, and Russia.
In the past month, small businesses, restaurants, and hotels have used alternative fuels such as coal, kerosene, biomass, and RDF pellets to conserve LPG for priority users.
Hospitals, educational institutions, and critical commercial consumers are being prioritised. Restaurants will receive 20% of their average monthly LPG allocation.
State governments have been directed to identify beneficiaries to prevent hoarding and black-market activity. Meanwhile, corporate catering firms and institutional kitchens are shifting to induction systems, boilers and biofuels while adjusting menus. Some companies, including HCLTech, have advised employees to work from home, while gig workers and street vendors are facing financial strain due to supply disruptions.
India LPG crisis: Key points explained
* Import dependence: Approximately 55% of India’s LPG demand is met through imports from the Gulf region, which makes supply chains vulnerable to disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz.
* Shrinking buffer risk: Without government intervention, LPG stock coverage could have declined from 20–25 days to just 5–10 days by the end of March.
* Demand curbs: The government has limited daily LPG sales to approximately 5 million cylinders, resulting in an estimated 10% reduction in consumption.
* Booking gap widened: The interval for booking LPG refills has increased to 25–45 days, compared to the previous 21-day period.
* Price hike: ₹60 per cylinder increase introduced to moderate demand.
* Higher domestic output: Refineries have redirected propane-butane streams from petrochemical production, increasing LPG output by approximately 28%.
* Yield improvement: LPG yield has increased from 4.5% in January 2026 to about 6%, with potential to reach 7%.
* Emergency imports: OMCs are buying spot LPG cargoes at higher prices, while 1 million tonnes from the US has been secured under a government-to-government deal.
* Industrial restrictions: Commercial and industrial LPG users will receive only 20% of their average monthly consumption.
* Industry impact: Diverting feedstock may reduce the supply of petrochemicals used in the plastics, rubber, solvents, and pharmaceutical sectors.

LPG spot prices spike to $850/mt; OMC losses widen despite ₹60 hike
While the Saudi CP on a monthly basis stands at USD545/mt for March and the Argus April swaps are at USD570 (possibly due to Gulf illiquidity), media articles have cited that Indian spot prices jumped to USD800–850/mt. US propane, however, still seems to be priced at under USD600/mt (cif); going ahead, it can provide some respite as more volume comes in.
Following the ₹60/cyl RSP hike, LPG losses for OMCs are at ₹74, though they increase to almost ₹500 for spot cargo, with the rupee weakening further; hence, the OMC under-recovery scenario is uncertain and would depend on the Aramco-Sonatrach CP for April, besides US propane and Asian spot prices.
Commercial LPG prices were also increased by 7% on 7-Mar, with the Delhi rate at ₹1,883/cyl, while auto LPG prices were raised by ₹5–6/ltr on 11-Mar, with the Kolkata rate at ₹62.7/ltr. – Emkay

CGD sales may drop 8–10% amid Middle East gas supply disruption: CRISIL
The city gas distribution (CGD) industry in India may see its daily sales volume moderate by 8–10% due to reduced natural gas supply arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, until the situation stabilizes in the near term. All the same, the ability to pass on price increases to end customers will cushion the CGD players’ profitability. Liquidity buffers, support from strong sponsors, and moderate leverage are likely to support the credit profiles of CGD players. However, prolonged uncertainty in the Middle East will remain a monitorable.
Our assessment of seven CGD companies, together accounting for ~70% of the sales volume last fiscal, indicates as much. For the record, the CGD industry relies on domestically produced natural gas for ~60% of its requirement, while imports account for the remaining ~40%. — CRISIL

India boosts LPG production, raises price and booking gap to manage supply
The GoI, on 9-Mar, directed all refineries to maximize LPG yields and channel the entire propane-butane stream output (including propylene, butene) solely to PSU OMCs, for domestic LPG. This has led to 28% rise in domestic output so far, implying 6% yield.
We estimate 7.5mmtpa of total petchem conversion to LPG which could take the yield to 7%.
On the demand front, the GoI raised price of a domestic cylinder by Rs60 wef 7-Mar, while also increasing the minimum booking gap from 21 to 25/45 days for urban/rural users.
The booking-to-delivery cycle remains at 2.5 days, but per our checks, there could be a few days’ delay due to spurt in panic-booking.
Supplies to C&I had been stopped, with a committee being set up for reviewing allocation; but this was followed by 20% normal allocation, which we believe is because there is already fall in demand (5mn domestic cylinders delivered daily vs 6mn in Jan-26).
GoI has also taken steps to raise supply (and usage) of kerosene, FO, and other fuels to domestic and C&I customers. – Emkay

Morgan Stanley research note on the Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz disruptions
• recent Morgan Stanley report highlights how the Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz closure cause far broader supply chain issues than just oil, impacting fertilizers, helium, sulfuric acid, aluminum, and more.
• Oil prices have surged to $94 per barrel due to halted shipments, drone attacks on vessels, and unsafe passage, but this is only the headline story.
• One-third of global urea (the world’s most used fertilizer) typically flows through the strait; with planting season underway, shortages are driving fertilizer prices higher.
• Curzio recommended CF Industries (a major fertilizer producer) weeks earlier; the stock has risen over 30% (e.g., from around $104 to $136 range in early March 2026).
• Qatar supplies 30–40% of global helium, mostly from one plant now shut down; helium is essential for semiconductor manufacturing, with no substitutes, and AI chips require even more of it.
• South Korean and Taiwanese chipmakers claim short-term helium supplies are sufficient, but prolonged closure threatens longer-term production.
• About 50% of global sulfuric acid originates from the Gulf region; it’s vital for extracting metals like copper, cobalt, nickel, zinc, and uranium—all critical for data centers and AI infrastructure.
• Gulf smelters (e.g., a major plant in Qatar shut since March 3) provide nearly 10% of global aluminum supply, adding further pressure on materials for infrastructure.
• Disruptions are extending beyond weeks to potentially months; even after reopening, Goldman estimates 20 more days of lingering effects.
• If issues persist into April, simultaneous hits could affect semiconductors, AI buildout, food prices, and energy markets.
• he U.S. benefits relatively more (as a net oil exporter), while allies in Asia, South America, and Europe face heavier economic damage from higher prices.
• Political pressure is building: Trump aims to resolve it quickly, but U.S. public support for the war is low, GOP senators are distancing themselves, and midterms loom.

Geopolitical risks and rising LPG, LNG costs threaten Indian auto sector
JPM on Autos
Ongoing geopolitical conflict & rising commodity prices are creating dual risks of production disruptions and cost inflation for the Indian Auto industry
Specific risks/challenges are as follows:
1) Gas (LNG/LPG) shortages (see note here) could lead to production shutdowns/disruptions,
2) Potential disruptions to CNG availability at pumps could impact consumer preference for these vehicles,
3) Higher fuel and commodity costs could hurt margins,
4) Global shipping disruptions could impact exports,
5) Weakening consumer sentiment could hurt the recovery that we have seen post the GST cuts.

Impact of commercial LPG shortages on food manufacturing and processing operations.
Amit Goyal, CEO and Director of Amar Pure Gold
The availability of commercial LPG remains an important operational factor for the broader food ecosystem in India. While most organized food manufacturing units like ours have access to alternate fuel sources and contingency systems that allow production to continue without major disruption, we are closely monitoring the evolving situation given the seriousness of the issue.
At our manufacturing facilities, we have built operational flexibility by maintaining alternative energy options and fuel management systems to ensure continuity of production and supply.
However, it is important to note that the use of commercial LPG is significantly more concentrated in restaurants, cloud kitchens, catering units, and small food outlets. Any prolonged disruption in supply could have a much larger impact on these segments, potentially affecting food service operations and the overall industry ecosystem.
Given the interconnected nature of the food sector, uninterrupted fuel availability remains critical for the smooth functioning of the industry as a whole. We hope that supply stability is restored quickly to avoid wider disruptions across the food value chain
Export challenges for frozen food companies, particularly with logistics disruptions and port congestion
Frozen food exporters operate in a highly time-sensitive logistics environment where uninterrupted cold chain movement is critical. Port congestion and logistics disruptions can lead to vessel delays, higher freight costs, and operational challenges, particularly as frozen products rely on refrigerated containers and strict temperature control throughout transit.
Another challenge during congestion is the limited availability of refrigerated containers, as equipment often remains held up at congested ports, slowing down new export shipments.
That said, the impact of current geopolitical tensions on our exports has not been very severe so far. Key markets such as the USA, Canada, and Australia follow different sea routes and remain relatively insulated, while disruptions are more pronounced on routes connected to Europe, Africa, and parts of the Middle East.
One positive factor in these testing times has been the regulatory oversight and coordination by major economies and global shipping stakeholders, which has helped maintain relative stability in freight prices and the availability of containers so far

Oil & Gas Crisis – Key Takeaways
Scale of Crisis
* Global oil market facing ~10 mbpd supply gap by Apr’26 due to Middle East disruptions.
* Product markets (LPG/refined fuels) tighter than crude, creating immediate shortages.
* India facing severe LPG risk given large household consumption.
Storage & Asia Impact
* China: ~1.2bn barrels storage (~100+ days); stopped product exports.
* India: ~160mn barrels (~15–20 days); rest of Asia ~10 days buffer
* Asian shortage likely to reduce exports to Europe & Africa, worsening global product deficit.
India LPG Risk
* 50–60%+ LPG imports routed via Strait of Hormuz; India imports >50% of LPG consumption
* Govt may delay refinery maintenance to support domestic supply.
* Current risk mainly on LPG/product availability rather than crude supply
Refinery Damage
* Key Middle East assets hit including Ras Tanura Refinery, Fujairah Oil Terminal and Al-Zour Refinery
* ~2 mbpd refining capacity impacted (~20–25% of regional capacity)
Oil Price Outlook
* International Energy Agency released ~400mn barrels ,but prices rose as markets expect longer disruption
* $200/bbl scenario not ruled out if supply disruptions persist.
Geopolitical Context
* Strait of Hormuz remains the key global chokepoint, described as Iran’s “nuclear-level leverage”over oil markets.
* China well positioned with large storage while others run down inventories.
Recovery Outlook
* Crude supply can recover faster, but refinery/product supply will take longer due to infrastructure damage and priority to domestic fuel demand.
* View – Positional Buy Reliance – benefit for elevated spreads to continue. Correction is a buying opportunity.
