Russia is considering a full block on all Google services as it intensifies efforts to regulate the country’s digital space. The official proposal follows renewed warnings from lawmakers. They argue that the way Google handles its user data may pose a national security risk. As tension between the state and the tech giant increases, the possibility of a complete ban continues to rise.
Russia might soon block Google services across the country
Russian lawmaker Andrei Svintsov said that the government may block Google services as the citizens’ information is currently being stored outside the country. He argues that storing citizens’ data outside the country creates a serious threat to Russia and its economy. He further claims that it enables foreign monitoring of domestic companies and could contribute to future sanctions.
Svintsov had earlier criticized Google-owned platforms, suggesting that even Google Meet could face a ban after recent service disruptions. He continues to support the Russian government’s demand that foreign firms must store the local residents’ data within the borders. They are completely against the foreign storage of the user data.
This move could expand digital isolation in the state
The introduction of a new bill in the State Duma to strengthen rules governing personal data transfers abroad signals that stricter measures are coming. The lawmakers say that the aim is a soft squeeze that “encourages” American technology companies to leave the Russian market altogether. Several other popular websites and apps are already blocked in the country. Citizens are forced to use VPNs to access such platforms.
The Russian government wants to strengthen internal control across the country. Authorities have recently restricted access to several Western platforms, including Roblox, FaceTime, and Snapchat, accusing them of hosting extremist materials or enabling harmful activities. Moreover, WhatsApp was recently threatened with a full ban as well. The current direction of the government points towards deeper digital isolation and stronger state control.
