Android May Get an iPhone-Like Live Video Emergency Feature

Android May Get an iPhone-Like Live Video Emergency Feature

There’s a new development on the horizon for Android users that could make a huge difference in an emergency. Google Pixel phones already have some useful safety features like Car Crash Detection and Safety Check. However, it appears Google is working on a new tool inspired by iPhone’s emergency live video feature to further enhance its safety offerings.

For years, Apple has offered a feature called Emergency SOS Live Video. It allows a person to stream live video to emergency dispatchers if requested. This gives first responders a real-time look at a situation, providing crucial information that a phone call alone can’t convey. From assessing the severity of a fire to locating someone in distress, a live video feed can be a powerful tool for dispatchers to send the right help immediately.

Google is working on live video sharing with emergency services

Currently, Pixel phones have an emergency video recording feature, but it’s a bit different. It records a video up to 45 minutes long and sends a link to your emergency contacts. However, it doesn’t offer a live stream directly to emergency services.

That said, recent findings by Android Authority in the code for Google Play Services (25.35.34 beta) suggest that a new, more advanced feature is in development for Android devices. The code points to a new tool that will let users “share live video” directly with emergency services. Yes, it sounds almost identical to Apple’s feature. This video wouldn’t be saved to your device, but a dispatcher could choose to record it if needed.

This new capability would be a major upgrade for Pixel owners. Its discovery within Google Play Services raises an exciting possibility: this feature might not be exclusive to Pixel phones. Since Google Play Services is a core component of most Android devices, this new live video sharing could eventually be available to the entire Android ecosystem, from Samsung to Motorola and beyond. It would mark a major step for Google in expanding its safety features to a wider audience. This way, Google would ensure that more people have access to critical tools during an emergency.
