Google Photos is Testing a New TikTok-Style Video Discovery Feature

Google Photos is reportedly testing a new TikTok-style feature that could help users find related videos more easily. The idea behind the feature is similar to the Memories tool, which highlights old photos using artificial intelligence. However, this time, the main focus is on video clips. The tool will group videos that share common details, such as place or event.

TikTok-style short video clip section is coming to Google Photos

As reported by AndroidAuthroity, the V7.60 of the Google Photos app on Android adds a new Related videos button. It appears when the user is watching a video clip. Tapping on the button opens an explore page that contains several short-form videos. The clips inside the section appear to be automatically picked by AI.

The main aim of the feature is to help the user discover videos from the same day, location, or activity without searching manually. However, since the feature is still in the testing phase, the results seem to be a bit inaccurate or mixed. It will most likely be polished by the time it arrives on the stable version.

Users can rediscover clips from shared events, locations, and days

The videos in the explore page are shown in a vertical feed that users can scroll through. The UI and the overall functioning of the page are very similar to TikTok and other short video platforms. Under every single video clip, there would be certain options such as save, share, and view details. The user can also tap on a new “View Day” option to access all photos and videos taken on that specific date.

Further, Google is also experimenting with a light theme in the photo editor section. This option gives the user a brighter background, which can make it easier to see dark edges while editing images. As said earlier, neither feature is yet available to the general audience. The company is still working on it. If everything goes well, we can expect the feature to land on the public version in the coming weeks.
