US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will be travelling to the US for the G20 Trade Ministers’ meeting and continue engaging on trade related issue whiles underlining that the two countries were working to build a fair-trade relationship,

“Our two governments are working closely together to build a trade relationship that is fair, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial. And I don’t know if this is public yet, but minister Goyal will be travelling at the end of the month to the US to continue engaging as we host the G20 talks,” Gor said at an event organised by the Automotive Component Manufacturers’ Association of India on Wednesday.

Negotiations between India and the US on a bilateral trade agreement have slowed down following the US Supreme Court’s verdict striking down President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs, with Washington now exploring alternative tariff measures through Section 301 investigations and other penal options.

But the two sides remain upbeat on taking forward the trade talks. “As our governments work through the details of our trade relationship, we should aim to create an environment where American suppliers and technology can freely access the market and be sold to Indian manufacturers, while Indian firms can compete fairly in the US market,” Gor said.

Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, without directly referring to the trade pact, pointed out in a lighter vein that India had concluded a trade agreement with the EU last year, a few months after EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic attended the ACMA summit. “So now you (US Ambassador to India) know why you’re here,” he quipped.

On co-operation in critical technologies, Gor said the recently signed Pax Silica Declaration would help facilitate cross-border investments between India and the US.

“The declaration will make it easier for American and Indian companies to invest across borders and will empower the next generation of entrepreneurs and builders in both of our countries,” he said. “We trust India and we want to work with India,” the Ambassador added.
