    Qualcomm’s Non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Is Now Official

    Qualcomm’s Non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Is Now Official

Qualcomm has just announced a new Snapdragon 8 series chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. This is not the company’s new flagship, just to be clear, as the recently announced Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 sits above it in the pecking order.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is here, and it is inferior to the ‘Elite’ model

We knew that the non-Elite version is coming, and it’s now here. It has a similar feature set as the ‘Elite’ model, but its performance is not on the same level, which was to be expected. Still, this thing looks good on paper.

Interestingly enough, Qualcomm compared the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from 2023. The company says it boasts a 36% improvement in CPU performance and an 11% improvement in GPU performance compared to that chip. It’s also more power-efficient, by 13% overall, says the company.

It has slower clock speeds than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 has a similar Oryon CPU setup as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It does come with slower clock speeds. It has two prime cores and six performance cores.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

Both of those prime cores are running at 3.8GHz, compared to 3.62GHz and 4.6GHz in the Elite model. Its performance cores are capped at 3.32GHz.

What else is different? Well, the Snapdragon X80 modem is used here, and it’s a bit slower in comparison. Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth do seem unchanged, though. Yes, Wi-Fi 7 is supported, as is Bluetooth 6. UWB is supported too.

UFS 4.1 is also not supported, unfortunately, while its Adreno GPU and Hexagon AI NPU are also a level below what the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 offers. The Adreno 840 GPU is used here, with the Frame Motion Engine 3.0, like on the ‘Elite’. However, the Adreno High-Performance Memory (HPM) is not supported.

OnePlus is expected to be the first company to use it

The rest of the specs do seem to be pretty much the same as on the ‘Elite’. With that being said, it seems more than likely that OnePlus will be the first company to use this chip. It will fuel the OnePlus Ace 6T/OnePlus 15R. Motorola and Vivo are also expected to release phones with that chip soon.

Qualcomm did confirm that the first devices using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will appear “in the coming weeks,” so stay tuned.
