SpaceX Wants 80,000 Cell Sites for Starlink Mobile

SpaceX is making a massive push into the mobile phone business by hunting for tens of thousands of ground-based cell towers across the United States. Pairing its orbiting Starlink satellites with physical cell towers on the ground would allow the company to construct a fully functional cellular network from scratch. If this ambitious rollout comes together, American smartphone owners could soon have a legitimate fourth nationwide wireless carrier to choose from.

Securing half of America’s cell towers

According to a report from Bloomberg, SpaceX is currently negotiating with major infrastructure owners to lease access to at least 80,000 cell sites nationwide. Securing that many locations would give the company access to roughly half of all operational cell towers in the country, based on industry figures from Reuters. Crown Castle Chief Executive Officer Chris Hillabrant even confirmed during a recent earnings call that his firm is holding active leasing discussions with all major satellite and telecom companies.

Combining satellites femtocells and ground infrastructure

Securing 80,000 cell sites would instantly place Starlink Mobile on par with the macro tower footprints of established giants like T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. Data from the Wireless Infrastructure Association shows that traditional carriers rely heavily on these large towers alongside smaller street-level antennas to keep city coverage dense. To fill those local coverage gaps, SpaceX plans to pair its upgraded direct-to-cell satellites with compact indoor transmitters called femtocells that subscribers can install at home.

    Financial hurdles and strategic leverage

Building a full nationwide ground network will not come cheap, though. Analysts at financial firm TD Cowen estimating the project could cost SpaceX over 80 billion dollars (via Reuters). However, SpaceX’s recent purchases of low-band spectrum and satellite spectrum from EchoStar prove that the company is genuinely committed to taking on traditional phone companies. Giving frustrated wireless customers another high-speed option could finally shake up a domestic market that has been locked down by three dominant providers for years.

Merging space-based satellite coverage with traditional ground towers offers an exciting fix for eliminating annoying dead zones in remote rural regions. While legacy carriers continue to downplay the competitive threat, SpaceX appears determined to build a network that works everywhere from deep canyons to busy downtown streets. Consumers tired of rising cell phone bills and spotty service will want to keep a close eye on how these infrastructure deals play out over the coming months.
